There are player who score goals and lift trophies but there are few who mark an era. One of those is Alexia Putellas. A player forever capable of transforming the history of a club and a sport. Wednesday, Spotify Camp Nou experienced one of the most emotional moments in its recent history. Farewell to a captain who has made FC Barcelona into a world leader in women's football.

The day after announcing her departure, Alexia said farewell surrounded by teammates, family, friends and representatives from the club. She did so as a legend, as a player who has changed everything. The young girl who used to go to the stadium would never have imagined that one day more than 91,000 people would chant her name. The same stadium was once again witness to an eternal moment. This farewell was not just a goodbye; it was also the culmination of a career.

"My history will always be with Barça"

Alexia became emotional especially when it came to speaking about her team-mates, the coaching staff and all the people who accompanied her during her years at Barça. "I've made my dream come true," she said. She also had words of thanks for the press, the board of directors, and above all for her family, recognising that they have enjoyed the journey with the same intensity that she has. "Physically I feel fine, but wherever I go, this circle won't be there. These teammates, this stadium, or these fans. All this is irreplaceable," continued Alexia.

Alexia also explained how she will remain linked to the club beyond the emotional ties. The player announced that, together with the FC Barcelona Foundation, she will open up an academy to help more than 400 underprivileged young girls have opportunities within the world of football.

A beginning charged with emotion

The event began by showing a video of the announcement of her farewell. From the very start emotions ran high. A visibly emotional Alexia watched the footage with her eyes shining and her heart open. "Yesterday my heart hurt. I felt an incredible emptiness. Today I am full of love," she confessed.

The captain then explained that the perfect moment to leave does not exist but that the decision came after an especially emotional season, marked by the competitive demands and the immense emotional link to Barça. Everything about continuing could well have tainted the path that we have taken together," she said, recognising that lifting the fourth Champions League trophy was a determining moment in understanding that now was the time.

Convesation with Xavi Llorens: the start of a legend

one of the most special moments of the morning came with a conversation between Alexia and Xavi Llorens, the coach who brought her back to Barcelona at one of the most difficult times in her life. Llorens remembered that young player with an endless desire to grow: "She did not have a ceiling as a player nor as a person. She was committed to Barça and to football." Those words visibly moved Alexia, who recognised his key role in her career. "I remember the day I spoke to him. He told me that I could mark a before and after and that I would be an emblem of the club. I didn't believe it."  She also admitted that thanks to Llorens she understood "what it means to be a Barça player."

Messages from an unrepeatable career

The event also included a video tribute with messages from former teammates, friends, and figures linked to the club and to football.  Ex-players such Virginia Torrecilla, Melanie Serrano and Vicky Losada as well as names such as Carles Puyol, Sergio Busquets, Andrés Iniesta, Pedri and Raphinha all agreed that she stands out not just for her trophies and success but also for her humanity, commitment and the impact she has had on and off the field.

Generational relief

The conversation with Vicky López symbolized the bridge between generations. The young blaugrana, emotional, spoke in the name of all players who have grown up with Alexia as their role model. "She has been much more than a captain. She is an example on and off the field," said López. For her part, Alexia left a message for the new generation of footballers: "They should never lose the passion. They have the talent and strength to keep making history." She continued to say what it means to form part of the club: "Being a Barça player is 24 hours a day. When you are there, you have to be at 100%."

"You have made us happy and you have managed to make the whole world love women's football," said Yuste.

The event concluded with an institutional photograph, the award of a gift, and a collective hug amongst all the teammates. Amongst applause and emotions, "Magnolias" rang out at Spotify Camp Nou which bid farewell to much more than a player, farewell to an era.
